Monastery Tronoša

Monastery Tronoša, well known as the great reformer of Serbian language Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, has begun his education. Since 2004, the elder of the monastery is abbesses Varvara (Veselinović). Monastery is located in the village Korenita, not far from Tršić.

Historical information

In the Tronoša chronicles, it is mentioned that the founder of the monastery was Queen Katalina Nemanjić, spouse of King Dragutin. It is considered that the monastery was constructed between 1276 and 1282. At the end of the 15th century, it was completely demolished by the Ottomans. It was reconstructed in the 16th century. Reformer of Serbian language Vuk Stefanović Karadžić started his education in the year 1797 at the monastery. During the first and second Serbian uprisings, Tronoša was the destination of arrangements of uprising commanders, in which it underwent new demolishments. In the first world war, Tronoša was an improvised hospital for the care of the wounded soldiers. The last demolishment of the monastery was at the beginning of the second world war, where in the years 1964 and 1987 it was reconstructed as the honor and celebration of 100 years of death and 200 years of birth of the Vuk Stefanović Karadžić.

Location

Monastery Tronoša is located 16km from Loznica, in the village Korenita. From Belgrade (150km), Tronoša is reached by taking the highway Belgrade-Ruma-Šabac to Loznica. Then, from Loznica, "Valjevskim putem" (Road to Valjevo) 12km until touring to village Korenita to the monastery.
